Asteroids

March 29, 2009

As I was watching the movie called Armageddon the other day, I realized that it might happen. The movie is about an asteroid that is headed on a collision course with earth, and our attempts to stop it. In true Hollywood style, the movie was dramatic.

I am concerned though, that it really could come true. It’s a great big sky and anything may happen. Although our astronomers do the best they can, there is no coordinated effort to find these potential threats. I hope our government can find a way to fund this effort and better protect us all!

World Water Day

March 22, 2009

Throughout the world, today is recognized as World Water Day. In many countries, millions of people do not have clean water to drink. This causes all manner of sickness for the people without basic water sanitation. Mothers and children are forced to use contaminated water for cooking and drinking.

The United Nations general Assembly recognized this day in 1993 to call attention to the problem. In this country, clean water is pretty much taken for granted. We don’t even think about it in most cases. I hope that everyone will come together and find ways to eliminate this problem. We live in the twenty-first century and can send a man to the moon, don’t tell me we can’t find a way to provide clean water for all!

Smarter than rain?

March 19, 2009

Anyone who has ever owned a cat has been led to the door. My cat Jack will come over and meow, meow, meow until someone gets up and lets him out. Jack is very territorial and likes to check his turf on a nightly basis.

One thing Jack does not like is rain; it would take a lot of effort to put him out in it. Jack is a pretty smart cat and when he sees its raining out of the front door, he will try the back door next. It’s always funny to me that he thinks the back door will provide results more to his liking. Poor jack, I guess it’s another long night looking out the window!

Spring!

March 16, 2009

Today it hit 70 degrees and the mild weather is being forecast for the rest of the week. The trees, shrubs and early spring flowers have all busted into bloom today. It is like the blossoms are opening right in front of your eyes.

Does anyone else get it? This is exactly 6 weeks from Groundhog Day and Spring is here. So that’s makes him right no matter which way he predicted it would go.

Of course, the first official day of Spring is this coming Friday. But based on the temperatures and sunny skies, I’d say that Spring is already here.
